What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
EMDR is an evidence-based treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is also useful for other mental health issues including anxiety disorders, depression, grief, phobias and addictions. EMDR targets unprocessed memories that contain negative emotions, sensations and beliefs. By activating the brain’s information processing system, old memories are digested and transformed so they no longer create disturbances in peoples lives.
How Does EMDR Work?
The key component of EMDR that helps people process and recover from traumatic events is called Bilateral Stimulation (BLS). BLS is a therapeutic technique that alternates sensory stimuli (side-to-side eye movements, taps, or tones) to both sides of the body. When combined with revisiting distressing memories and beliefs, BLS helps the brain process these stuck or frozen traumatic experiences.
